San Diego, CA, February 1, 2005 -- RD Instruments announces the sale of a Workhorse Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) to Otronix Systems, Inc. in support of subsea trenching operations.
In an effort to protect telecommunication cables from damage by bottom fishing trawlers, trenching operators off the coast of Korea and China are required to bury their cables 3 meters beneath the seabed. Such deep burials make trenching operations more difficult, as the vehicle’s advancement is restricted to very slow speeds. A precise understanding of the vehicle’s motion is critical at these crawling speeds to ensure that the trencher is moving as anticipated, and not burying itself in the seafloor.
To meet this demanding vehicle velocity measurement, KT Submarine has chosen RDI’s Doppler Velocity Log for its unique ability to deliver the required measurement performance via its patented low-noise broadband Doppler technology.
The DVL unit was sold to Otronix Systems, Inc., RDI’s representative in Korea. Otronix was hired to consult to the end-user, KT Submarine, for the construction of this trenching vehicle. The DVL was installed at Perry Slingsby (Juptier FL) and ultimately delivered to KT Submarine in Korea.
Hyong Ossi, of Otronix explains, “The DVL will take the guesswork out of this critical progression parameter in trenching operations. This system will be used in lieu of the conventional fifth wheel technology, as the DVL will provide superior accuracy and can be used in any direction. The fifth wheel can only be used in forward and reverse. This capability will be particularly critical on small diameter fibre burial operations.”
RD Instruments is a leading manufacturer of acoustic Doppler current profiling (ADCP) and Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) products for a wide array of scientific, commercial and military applications.
