ROVs are increasingly being asked to perform more demanding and complex tasks. An increasing number of DVLs are currently in use on ROVs to monitor vehicle direction and speed; however, this instrument can also be used to enhance the current industry standard automatic control modes (heading and depth) to include station-keeping. This works in the same manner as a vessel DP system, providing a true ROV dynamic positioning capability. This allows the operator to automatically control vehicle motion and position, and focus on other tasks.
The station-keeping mode could be programmed to offer a controlled displacement function where the operator enters a desired displacement increment, either in X Y and Z directions, or in range and bearing; and the vehicle would follow the programmed route. DP your ROV and simplify vehicle operation and control, thereby allowing a broad range of pilots to perform complex and intricate tasks.
