Discover Teledyne RDI’s Long Range Horizontal ADCP with Directional Wave Measurement Capability

Teledyne RDI’s new combined product offering provides the following key advantages:

Versatility!
A single instrument provides measurements of two needed parameters: surface currents and directional waves, and both measurements are superior in range and resolution to any commercial product available singly for either measurement - let alone both.

Safety!
The measurements are available in real time to the people who need them to make operational decisions.

Robustness!
The measurements are available in all weather conditions – from windless calm to raging seas.

Ease of Maintenance!
No surface expression is required – no buoys to deploy, no hazards to navigation
No bottom mounting is required – no scour or burial problems.

Superior Directional Resolution!
The Long Range Horizontal ADCP creates a much larger array of measurements than does the vertically oriented ADCP, which results significantly improved directional resolution. A comparison study between a Long Range Horizontal ADCP and a nearby vertically oriented ADCP was carried out in early 2004. Both systems were configured to gather optimal wave measurements. Below are comparison polar plots taken over the same time frame. Notice that both systems resolve two wave trains of similar frequency traveling in different directions, as well as a third wave train of different frequency. The plot generated by the Horizontal system is on the right, and it is showing the waves much more clearly.

It is important to note that resolving two wave trains of similar frequency traveling in different directions is only possible with array processing. That is, without a measurement array such as the one we create, or one created by deploying multiple instruments, the two wave trains seen above would probably be wrongly reported as a single wave traveling in a direction intermediate to the two actual directions. Because the array created by the Horizontal covers such a large spatial extent, the resolution from its array is much better than the array created by the vertical.

Teledyne RDI’s User Interface:
Teledyne RDI’s user interface was designed with operational safety concerns in mind.
A visual indicator of the ADCP measurement volume is displayed along with several key monitoring requirements including:

The ability to continually monitor at three user-configurable ranges
Polar plots showing wave direction and energy

Surface Currents Waves
  • Mean Currents
  • Peak Currents
  • Time series of the peak currents, complete with user-configurable warning and danger zones
  • The ability to continually monitor at three user-configurable ranges (e.g. near the structure, away from its influence and at an offloading buoy or in a shipping channel)
  • Time series of significant wave height, peak period, peak direction and water level, with the ability to set warning and danger zones on significant wave height and peak period
  • Polar plots showing wave direction and energy
  • Non-directional spectra
